History of the NCTC Eagle Pair

This pair stays around/near the nest all year. They do not migrate.

The NCTC eagles first showed up during the winter of 2002-03. They started working on a nest at that time, but only managed to gather a few sticks. They returned to the nest in the fall of 2003, began working on the nest in earnest. They had a large nest built by January of 2004. They laid the first egg on Valentine's Day and two eaglets were hatched by the first day of spring. Both eaglets survived and fledged in early June.

The adults returned in November of 2004. They spent two
months making repairs to the nest and exhibiting breeding
behavior. The first egg was laid on February 15, 2005, and one eaglet hatched in late March. It survived and fledged in mid-June.

In September of 2005 NCTC installed a small video camera
about 10 feet above the eagle nest allowing  a “birds-eye” viewinside the nest. A local tree service company was hired to do the installation. They used their 75-foot bucket truck, but had to climb an additional 10 feet to reach the nest. The nest is about 85 feet high in a large sycamore tree, and is about 5 feet across, 7-8 feet long, and 4 feet deep, and probably weighs a few hundred pounds. It is made of branches and large sticks with a softer grass and leaf
lining. Both eagles spend a lot of time repairing and keeping the nest strong and sturdy. The eagle cam went live in February 2006, and quickly becam a favorite spot for many seasoned and new eagle cam viewers.

Avid eagle fans named the pair Liberty (M) and Belle (F) in the summer of 2006.

Many thanks to the folks at NCTC for all their work on keeping the eagle cam running!

The egg laying history for this pair is as follows -

    1st Yr 2004 - 1st Egg Feb 14 - 2 Eaglets hatched & fledged

    2nd Yr 2005 - 1st Egg Feb 15 - 1 Eaglet hatched & fledged

    3rd Yr 2006 - Eggs Laid Feb 9, 11 & 15 - 3 Eaglets hatched & fledged (First season for the cam)

4th Yr 2007 - 2 eggs by Feb 9th (cam was down). 3rd egg Feb 12th. No hatching this season, probably due to the late inclement weather

    6th Yr 2009- 3 Eggs Laid Jan 31, Feb 2 & Feb 6 - 1 Eaglet hatched & fledged

2010- 4 eggs laid - Feb 2, 6, 9, 13. Only the last egg hatched on March 21. The first 2 disappeared during a snowstorm on Feb 7, and the 3rd one was laid during a snowstorm on Feb 9, and disappeared around Feb 23.
